How to Learn Mahjong in 10 Minutes

Mahjong looks complicated — 144 tiles, strange symbols, and a table full of players clicking and discarding. But the core game is simpler than you think. Here's what you need to know in 10 minutes.

The Tiles (1 minute)

There are three main suits plus honors:

- Bamboo (条/Tiao): Green tiles with bamboo sticks. 1-9.
- Characters (万/Wan): Chinese characters for 1-10,000. 1-9.
- Dots (筒/Tong): Circles representing coins. 1-9.
- Winds: East, South, West, North (4 each)
- Dragons: Red, Green, White (4 each)
- Flowers/Seasons: Bonus tiles (8 total)

The Goal (1 minute)

Build a complete hand of 14 tiles: 4 sets (melds) of 3 tiles each, plus a pair (eyes). A set can be:
- Pung: Three identical tiles
- Chow: Three consecutive numbers in the same suit
- Kong: Four identical tiles (acts as a pung but you draw an extra tile)

The Turn (2 minutes)

Each player takes turns:
1. Draw a tile from the wall
2. Decide if you want to claim the last discarded tile (for a meld)
3. Discard one tile face-up in the center
4. Repeat until someone completes a hand

Claiming Tiles (2 minutes)

- Pung: Claim any player's discard if you have 2 matching tiles
- Chow: Claim only the player to your LEFT's discard for a sequence
- Kong: Claim with 3 matching tiles
- Mahjong (Win): Claim any discard to complete your hand

Special Hands (2 minutes)

Some special patterns score extra:
- All Pungs: Every meld is a pung (no chows)
- Mixed Shifted Chows: Three chows shifting by one number
- Seven Pairs: Seven matching pairs
- Thirteen Orphans: One of each terminal/honor tile

Quick Tips (2 minutes)

1. Start with more honor tiles — they're safe to hold early
2. Discard isolated tiles first — single tiles far from anything else
3. Watch what others discard — this tells you what suits they're NOT collecting
4. Don't chase expensive hands — beginners win more with simple, fast hands
5. Defense is winning — if you can't make a good hand, discard safe tiles
