Mahjong is more than a game — it's a social tradition. Whether you're playing at a family gathering or a local club, these etiquette rules will keep you welcome at any table.

1. Handle Tiles with Care

Don't slam tiles, don't flip them aggressively, and never throw a tile into the discard area. Slide tiles gently into your hand and place discards softly. The noise of tiles is part of the atmosphere, but there's a difference between a gentle click and a hard slam.

2. Don't Touch Your Discards

Once a tile leaves your hand, it stays in the discard area. Don't grab it back or change your discard — that's considered very poor form. Think before you discard.

3. Speak Up When You Claim

If you want to claim a discard for a pung, chow, kong, or mahjong, say it clearly and immediately. Don't wait, hesitate, or mumble. Other players need a clear signal to proceed.

4. Arrange Your Hand Neatly

Keep your tiles organized by suit and number. It's not just for your benefit — other players (especially in friendly games) appreciate seeing a tidy hand. Chaotic hands suggest inexperience.

5. No Table Talk About Hands

Don't discuss what you need or what tiles are left. Don't coach other players. And definitely don't reveal your hand unless you're showing a winning hand for verification.

6. Respect the Discard Order

Discards should be laid in neat rows of 6, from left to right (or your local convention). This lets anyone review what tiles have been discarded. Messy discard areas cause confusion.

7. Don't Rush or Delay

Too slow frustrates everyone. Too fast pressures others. Find a comfortable rhythm — a few seconds to think before discarding is fine. Mechanical auto-play is not.

8. Limit Tile Counting

Experienced players don't appreciate someone stopping to count every tile in the wall. While legal in some variants, it slows the game and shows a lack of confidence. Trust your instincts more.

9. Be Gracious in Victory and Defeat

Mahjong is a game of significant luck. A win isn't all skill; a loss isn't all bad play. Congratulate winners, and don't gloat when you win. The table's atmosphere matters more than any single hand.

10. Know the House Rules Before You Start

Every group has their own variations — scoring, allowed patterns, penalty rules. Ask before sitting down. Knowing the rules shows respect for the table.
