Mahjong Scoring Guide for Beginners
Mahjong scoring seems impossibly complex — dozens of patterns, multipliers, and special bonuses. But for casual family games, you only need to know the basics.
The Basic Point System
Most casual mahjong uses a simple point-based scoring system. Here's how it works:
| Scoring Pattern | Points (Fan) | Description |
|-----------------|-------------|-------------|
| Self-Draw (Zimo) | +1 | Win by drawing your own tile |
| No Flowers | +1 | Win without any flower tiles |
| All Sequences | +1 | Hand has no pung/kong, only chows |
| Mixed Suit | +1 | Hand uses only two suits + honors |
| Pung of Dragons | +1 | A pung of red, green, or white dragons |
| Pung of Winds (Seat/East) | +1 | Pung of your own wind or prevailing wind |
| Half Flush | +2 | One suit + honors only |
| Full Flush | +5 | One suit only, no honors |
| All Pungs | +2 | Every meld is a pung or kong |
| Little Three Dragons | +3 | Two dragon pungs + dragon pair |
| Big Three Dragons | +5 | Three dragon pungs |
| Seven Pairs | +3 | Seven matching pairs |
How Scoring Actually Works
1. Start with a base — usually 1 point (fan) for winning
2. Add patterns — each pattern in your hand adds its points
3. Apply doubles — some patterns double the total instead of adding
4. Add bonuses — flower tiles, seat wind bonuses
Counting Example
Let's say you win with this hand:
- Three bamboo chows (1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9 bamboo)
- A pung of red dragons
- A pair of east wind
Your scoring:
- Base win: 1 point
- All sequences: +1 (no pungs in the chows)
- Pung of dragons: +1
- Mixed suit: +1 (bamboo + honor tiles)
- Self-draw (if you drew the winning tile): +1
Total: 3-5 points (depending on how you won)
Simplified Scoring for Family Games
Many families use a simplified version:
| Hand | Points |
|------|--------|
| Basic win | 1 |
| Multiple patterns (3+) | 2 |
| Expensive hand (5+) | 3 |
| Self-draw bonus | +1 |
Pro Tips
1. Flower tiles don't always score — check your house rules
2. A concealed hand scores more — don't claim every discard
3. The dealer pays/receives double — the dealer position matters
4. Limit hands cap the score — most games have a maximum (like 5-10 points)

Scoring is the most common source of confusion for new mahjong players. Focus on building clean hands first — the points will follow.
