How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

If someone says "mahjong" on a computer, they usually mean mahjong solitaire — the single-player tile-matching game. It's completely different from the 4-player game, but just as addictive.

What Is Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong solitaire is a matching game where you remove pairs of identical free tiles from a layered pyramid. The goal is to clear the entire board.

Key difference from real mahjong: No opponents, no strategy beyond matching and planning removal order. It's a puzzle, not a card game.

Basic Rules

1. A pyramid of tiles is arranged in 4-5 layers
2. You can only match tiles that are free — not blocked on the left or right, and not covered by tiles above
3. Match identical tiles to remove them as a pair
4. Season and flower tiles match each other (any season with any season)
5. Win by removing all tiles

What Makes a Tile "Free"?

A tile is playable if:
- No tile is on top of it (it's the topmost in its stack)
- It has at least one side (left OR right) exposed — not sandwiched

This is the most important rule. Many beginners lose because they don't check both conditions.

Winning Strategy

Tip 1: Check the top layer first
Always check if tiles on the top layer have matches before exposing lower tiles. Those top tiles become inaccessible if their matching tile is buried beneath.

Tip 2: Clear from the outside in
Tiles on the outer edges tend to block more tiles. Freeing them opens up the board faster.

Tip 3: Don't rush matches
Just because you see a match doesn't mean you should take it immediately. Sometimes waiting to free an alternative match gives you a better board position.

Tip 4: Look ahead 2-3 moves
Before matching a pair, scan what tiles that will free up. A bad match can leave you with a dead board.

Tip 5: Leave unmatched pairs visible
If a tile has only one matching partner on the board, try to remove other tiles first so that pair remains accessible.

Why You Get Stuck

Common dead-end situations:
- Two identical tiles stacked on each other — the bottom one is blocked
- A tile trapped on both sides — it's sandwiched and can never be removed
- Last pair of a tile type is on the same row, under different covers

Recognizing these patterns early helps you avoid dead boards.
